Field Trip

After two years simmering in the background, we finally took a little field trip to a blacksmith and Lincoln was able to make a knife from a railroad spike. It was rather timely that we had just studied in science the various melting temperatures for objects to become liquid. Obviously, this iron spike didn't liquify, but it was heated enough to be manipulated and molded as the blacksmith desired. Ben was a great instructor and is a homeschool graduate, so that was pretty cool. I learned some things too-such as the content of railroad spikes are 3% carbon. Lincoln is pretty proud of his knife and has only taken it off his belt for bed!
